Protective clothing / PPE

Conservation of the protective functions is a MUST !

Personal protection equipment (PPE) provides particular functions that protect its bearers from the dangers they are exposed to while pursuing their profession and that must not be impaired and need to be reestablished during reconditioning. Our special products conserve the effect of welder, heat and flame, chemical, antistatic, warning and weather protection.

General

The laundry has to guarantee that the protective clothing continues to possess these protective functions after it has been returned to the customer.
To meet these important conditions, the laundry have to

  • know the demands on the protective functions of the PPE,
  • know the typical risks for the protective clothing during usage and reconditioning,
  • have control over the washing and reconditioning procedures required for reestablishing the protective functions.

We offer special products and procedures that ensure optimum conservation of the material and of the protective functions to remove any dirt typically encountered in the individual professions. The water- and chemical-repelling characteristics result from post-finishing.

Advantages that our products offer for the reconditioning of personal protective equipment (PPE):

  • Effective and economic reconditioning of the PPE.
  • Reliable removal of all dirts.
  • Conservation / reestablishment of the protective functions.
  • Increase of service life.
  • Only few products required.
  • Minimization of the application quantities due to optimized procedures.
  • Reliable service.
  • Regular service by Kreussler application engineers.
  • Continual checking and adjustment of the procedure parameters.

Protective clothing for firemen

With the introduction of the new protective clothing for firemen made of aramid fibres, precise care instructions must be followed to preserve the protective functions and the usability of such clothing. This protective clothing has been designed to meet the following requirements:

  • Moisture protection against rain and extinguishing water.
  • Heat protection against flames and flying sparks.
  • Protection against cold.
  • Protection against chemicals.
  • Good pereceptibility at all times (day and night).

The protective clothing must comply with DIN EN 11612:2009 Protective clothing – Clothing to protect against against heat and flame –, DIN EN 340:2004 Protective clothing – General requirements and the manufacturing and inspection description for a universal protective clothing for firemen.

Rescue service clothing

Rescue service clothing must meet several criteria that are specified in GUV 2106 and BG-R 500:

  • Recognition, identification, and good perceptibility (signalling stripes) at the place of action (road traffic).
  • Wear characteristics, e.g. weather protection, water vapour permeability (sweat).
  • Construction and manufacture.

Chemical protective clothing

For chemical protective clothing, the EU standards distinguish between:

  • Chemical protective clothing with „limited service life“, i.e. the clothing is discarded after use. Therefore, this definition applies to disposable clothing.
  • Reusable“ chemical protective clothing: After use, this type of clothing is cleaned, decontaminated, and finished (e.g. post-finishing) after use according to the manufacturer's instructions.

In most cases, this chemical-proof clothing is made of PES or PAC fibres that prevent splashing liquids from penetrating due to fluorocarbon resin finishing. The washing procedure to be applied must ensure that an impairment of these effects is minimized and that the effects can be regenerated by a post-treatment.

Flame-retardant clothing

For welding or for activities with comparable hazard potential, welding and heat protective clothing must be worn. This clothing protects its bearer from blazing metal particles and sparks that occur during welding, grinding etc. The EU standard lists flame-retardant clothing as ”protective clothing that protects against heat and fire”.

Modern protective clothing that protects against heat and fire is generally designed in a way that ensures the washfastness of the protective effects. (In most cases, flame-retardant clothing is made of permanently finished cotton. Trade names are Proban, Secan, and Pyrovatex. However, there is also a small percentage of permanently finished wools, e.g. Zirpo, which is used predominantly for aircraft seats. Fabrics made of special fibres, e.g. mixtures of aramide and flame-retardant viscose (FR viscose), are gaining more and more importance.) The washing procedure must ensure that the protective effects are not impaired.

Signalling clothing

For anyone working in road traffic, the wearing of signalling clothing is mandatory by law. This clothing ensures that its bearer is clearly recognizable at long distance even in the dark. The reflective effect of the signalling stripes must not be impaired by the washing process.

The demands on signalling clothing are set forth in EU standards. These standards define the colour at new state, the colourfastness, the waterproofness, the water vapour permeability, the retroreflection of the new material, the retroreflection after testing and in rain as well as the minimum size, the care labelling, and the design.

For commercial laundries, this type of clothing is often problematic as the demands on the retroreflection and the colourfastness of such clothing can often enough not be ensured due to the severe operating conditions and extreme dirt. The reconditioning of signalling clothing in commercial laundries requires a special procedure that depends on the material characteristics of the reflective stripes. The clothing must not be treated with detergents that contain optical brighteners as otherwise the signalling function of the reflective stripes will be impaired.
